Robert’s Case study
Patient story – AirSense™ 10 Autoset™
Robert is a senior manager with an investment company who lives in Hornchurch in Essex. He is a 57-year old divorced father of two grown-up children. Robert was diagnosed with OSA 18 months ago.
Following his divorce, Robert found that he put on weight and felt lethargic. He had always snored, indeed this was a contributory factor in the breakdown of his marriage, but Robert found that he was also increasingly feeling sleepy in the day both at home and at work.
Realising that something was wrong, he went to see his doctor who referred him for a sleep study. It was found that he had been experiencing pauses in breath of up to 80 times an hour so perhaps little wonder that Robert had found himself nodding off in the middle of the day!
He was prescribed CPAP and started using the ResMed S9. Having met his current partner six months prior to diagnosis, Robert was also determined to lose weight. He successfully shed two stone, and he attributes the combination of this and the treatment to giving him a new lease of life.
Robert says, “Following my diagnosis, I feel like a changed person, my quality of life has improved dramatically! With ResMed’s support, I had no problems in using the CPAP device and immediately felt the results. I haven’t looked back since using CPAP and feel I’m once again living a normal life. Other people have noticed the difference and my mother has commented that it is like having the old me back! If anything, I wish I had done something about it sooner!”
In terms of the new AirSense 10 Autoset, Robert has found that the AutoSet Response function is particularly beneficial and enables him to sleep longer and deeper than previously. The airstream it delivers fluctuates with his sleep pattern rather than on a continual basis, and he finds this more comfortable.
The other major aspect Robert highlighted how quiet the new machine is. The S9 could be slightly noisier so his partner would wear earplugs to block out any sound but now she also gets a better night’s sleep as well and appreciates the almost complete absence of snoring!
Robert continues, “Technology moves on and certainly I have seen tangible improvements with the AirSense 10 Autoset. The AutoSet Response function and the quietness of the new model are the most significant for me personally but there are also improvements to the humidifier. Having always been a mouth breather, I could have a dry mouth and throat in the mornings but this has improved with the advancements within the new model and I also find it easier to clean.”
Commenting on the portability, Robert feels that both models are very easy to travel with and he has never had any problem taking his CPAP abroad.
He finds the design and size of the AirSense 10 Autoset are ideal. The remote assist is another useful feature which Robert recognises would be helpful if someone was experiencing any problems and would ensure that support is provided quickly.
In conclusion Robert says, “The machine has improved my quality of life immeasurably. Life is too short not to enjoy the time we have so I would encourage people who may have OSA to seek treatment as quickly as possible.”
“In terms of investment both the S9 and AutoSense 10 Autoset make such a tremendous difference that I would give up another expense, like a holiday, in order to have my CPAP machine.”
