Patricia’s Case study
Patient story – AirSense™ 10 Autoset™
Patricia is 52 and lives with her husband Alec in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire and between them they have six children. Patricia, who is originally from Maine in the US, now works with homeless young people.
Patricia first started to notice that she was sleeping badly 15 years ago but it was only when she moved to Derbyshire that it was suggested that the problem could be as a result of sleep apnoea. Having taken a sleep test at home, the reason for her poor sleep became apparent when she was told that she experienced 38 interruptions per hour. She was immediately offered CPAP treatment and has been using the S9 model.
Having agreed to take part in the AirSense 10 AutoSet trial, the feature which has made the biggest impact on Patricia has been the built-in humidifier. She had not used a humidifier previously and had experienced a sore throat as a result but with the AirSense 10 AutoSet’s inbuilt feature, Patricia immediately felt the difference. Despite sleeping 10 hours with the new device, she finds the humidifier is very efficient and the water lasts throughout the night so she wakes up with a clear throat.
Commenting on a recent in-patient stay in hospital Patricia says, “I wasn’t able to take the new device with me so I couldn’t wait to get home, not only to sleep in my own bed, but to use the AirSense 10 AutoSet and to benefiting from the enhanced sleep that it provides!”
Another feature that Patricia has identified, is the flexibility of the cord coming from the back of the machine. As a restless sleeper, she previously found that she would wake up with the cord wrapped around her but the new cord moves with her which is much more comfortable.
Patricia finds the device very easy to use and the fact that it is smaller and lighter will, she imagines, make it easier for travelling when she goes on holiday later in the year. But it is not only Patricia who has noticed the improvements. Her husband Alec has been sleeping very soundly thanks to the almost silent running of the machine.
Patricia explains, “With my old machine I occasionally snored a little but with the AirSense 10 AutoSet this has stopped completely. Together with the quiet running of the machine, we both find we sleep more soundly.”
She continues, “If someone has been diagnosed with OSA, I would definitely suggest the AirSense 10 AutoSet, It is a superior device on many levels and I definitely want to continue to use it now that the trial is over.”
